When eating, your body breaks down sugar, starches and other carbohydrates in glucose.
Glucose serves as the basic energy for your body cells. The glucose level in the blood increases
and the pancreas should produce insulin to take the glucose from the blood into the cells.
If you have diabetes the glucose will be build up in the blood and can't go to the cells. Your cells
may starve for energy and it can lead to serious complications. Fortunately people with diabetes
can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications. |
